Penn State hockey kicks off the second half of Big Ten play by welcoming No. 7 Michigan State to Pegula Ice Arena this weekend. The Nittany Lions are currently on the NCAA Tournament bubble and will be looking to make up some ground for an at-large bid, as well as within the Big Ten standings. But on Friday, Penn State will also be welcoming college hockey personality and Barstool Sports producer Mike Grinnell to Pegula Ice Arena for the highly anticipated top 20 matchup.
Top Barstool Sports podcast to spotlight Penn State hockey
Mike Grinnell, producer of the Barstool Sports podcast Spittin Chiclets, will be visiting Pegula Ice Arena on Friday night for Penn State’s top 20 matchup with Michigan State. The top hockey podcast in the country, Spittin Chiclets, features former NHL players Ryan Whitney and Paul Bissonnette (Biz), as well as Brian McGonagle, known as “Rear Admiral” or “RA.”
Grinnell has long been a big supporter of college hockey, from the ACHA club level to the NCAA D1. The Barstool Sports personality is often is the go-to guy during the podcast when any question of the sport comes up.
Recently, Grinnell has started a YouTube series known as “Chiclets University,” where he travels around to different NCAA D1 schools to check out their facilities and gameday atmosphere. In the first three episodes of this series, trips were made to Arizona State, UMass, and Boston College. Now, the Nittany Lions and Hockey Valley will be added to the list.
Impact for the Nittany Lions
This will be a tremendous opportunity for the Penn State hockey program to gain exposure across all of North America on the biggest hockey platform out there.
Mike Grinnell and the Spittin Chiclets brand promoting the Nittany Lions could help put Penn State hockey on the map for recruits who would never have even considered the school previously. The exposure will only help the recruiting run that Guy Gadowsky has been on recently.
In a day and age where the old guard of college hockey seems to be getting stronger with the introduction of NIL, this spotlight could be just the thing that a young program like Penn State needs to compete at the top of the sport.
